Replace it every 5 years/50Km to maintain OPTIMUM suspension & braking characteristics. Going longer will mean degraded handling and braking characteristics.
Simply speaking, you are supposed to replace it when you feel your vehicle is very bouncy or when the suspension isn’t absorbing the road impact anymore.
8. Are Leaking Shocks/ Struts Supposed to be Replaced?
To be frank, shock absorbers/ struts with only little oil leakage, are unnecessary to replace.
We can not judge the shock/strut has failed due to oil leakage, it could be affected by many factors such as leakage grade and oil leaking position of the shocks/struts body.
It is normal for the shock absorber to leak oil during normal working. For example, the front shock absorber, which is a strut shock absorber does not need to be replaced when the oil is between the oil seal cover and the spring seat.
However, if the oil leaks to the position below the spring seat, or the oil streams to the position below the spring bracket, or drops of oil appear, we need to replace it.
9. Why Shock absorbers/ Struts Should be Replaced in Pairs?
To ensure a safe and comfortable ride, the shocks/ struts always be replaced in pairs.
When you replace the shock absorbers/struts, remember to replace completely the protection kits (bumper stop and dust cover), mounting kits, and the springs at the same time.
Unless the vehicle has a very tiny number of miles on it, the old one is always more worn than the new shock absorber. So the damping force is different from side to side. It could lead to alignment/tire wear/vehicle stability issues down the road.
In addition, it will cause the newer shock/strut to wear out much faster than expected because this new shock has to work harder to make up for the old worn shock.
